WIPS

Recently moved to Pasadena CA. Going to study here for a year.

I admit I wasn't being very productive. I have been working on and off on this model for the past 6 months. First fullbody attempt. Each of the wip here are about...1-2 month apart.

As far as the model goes, I don't want to go crazy with the details. Just want to learn the process and see how well I can do. I really want clean and nice geometry, so this will definitely put my basic modeling skills to test.

This is an original character for a story. An Angel named Credo.

Misticetus

I was busing with a contest and didn't have a chance to work on my own concept work.

This WAYLE is Misticetus, inspired by bowhead whales. I hope for the next mech I can just use the render instead of having to composite it in photoshop.

Might retopo this and learn to texture it in substance painter.

Ranger

I finished him! I was debating whether I should cover his eyes but I decided to take the bold step of showing his face...

I also thought about giving him a mohawk...

Here's the final picture with all 3 of them together.

Arch - Blind
Ranger - Deaf
Hunter - Mute

They have special abilities that makes up for their disabilities. I think I've gotten better with these 3 pictures. Now I need to work on more whales and start doing full bodies.

Another attempt

Haven't been doing any worthwhile artwork since Belugah. All thanks to Starcraft 2 and relocation to FL.

Here's a WIP for my next picture. Hopefully it will be finished next weekend. I'm still not very efficient at designing or painting or photobashing mech scifi stuff...

Rage quitting is strong with this one.

Orka full body design

decided to use my first mech design for an original story.

Early line drawing.

Current full body design views. It's a few months old and there are a couple of adjustments that I will implement for the detailed design - anatomy of the legs, center of mass for the full body, leg/hip connections and feet stability for different movements.

This design is independent of the WAYLE series that I'm currently doing, it's basically about a man who built a robot.... and no spoilers!

Belugah

Next WAYLE - Belugah, inspired by Beluga whales.

For the past WAYLES, I tried to based my design on the real whales, but for Beluga I just decided to design a mech and make it white. Color combination was the most time consuming so it took a while to composite, but not much photobashing or painting.

The lighting was an accident, the original lighting was a default global lighting, but I played around with all the different light passes in photoshop, and this is the result of a good "accident".

Height info will be updated. Going to make it 7ft tall.

Hunter 2.0

A friend of mine took his personal time and painted over my Hunter picture so I modified my picture based on his feedback. My friend added a sword  but I changed it into a gun, first time making a weapon :)

There are only a few things that I didn't change such as the optics. I think blogspot automatically brighten up the picture but here's revised version, see the previous post for the older version.

Hunter

Finished! :)

I don't know why the head looks weird to me, maybe it's the perspective, I don't know if I should make it orthographic next time when I render. (Also need to get better at head sculpting)

This is Hunter, he actually doesn't/cant speak, I have one more to go, though I think I'm going to work on Wayles next.

Fiat Lux

I have always been a fan of Sergio Toppi's style, so I attemped to draw my mech in that style.

Only 1% digital, just to add the white and contrast in PS.  Done with markers and pen.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Genesis 1-3

"Dixitque Deus fiat lux et facta est lux"

Humpbac

Next WAYLE - Humpbac. Inspired by the humpback whales.

This was made before 2015, I just decided to finish it up now. Since humpback whales have a lot of bumps on their heads, I decide to use some kind of sensors to represent them,  originally I was using a spherical design for the sensors, but decided to use cylinder shapes.

I went with the black/yellow bumblebee color scheme.

Peace Maker mech concept

I have an original story that I want to make, it's called "Peace Maker". The story focus on a boy/man and a robot.

Here's the first pass of the mech, will do a few more passes before making it final. Weapons and accessories will be added in the end.

I don't want to make a super original/stylish mech, I just want to make something generic - a big heavy duty looking robot, because the story is not focused on mech, but the man/machine relationship.

Mechs

Finished pieces of my mech design. I am getting a bit annoyed at looking these two because I've been working on them for the past 4 weeks. Really like the results though.

These will be my baseline from now on, so any future pieces need to surpass these two.

Mehhh-ch

Original mech paint. Persoanlly I like the rough one better before I refined it.

I ran out of names.. so I decided to use the abbreviation of my undergrad aerospace class

90% there

Near the finishing stage of my 2 mech characters.

I'm pretty happy with my improvements so far. I've never done mech paintings like these before so I don't have a baseline to compare to, but now I do!

I named the characters because I've been working on them for the past month, I became quite attached to them.

I really like Odysseus, I think I will do more paintings and design improvements on him in the future.

Refinement

Refinement of the 2 selected thumbs. The one on the left has a little more organic feel, I named him SYCK... the name was from a text that I sent to my friend where I misspelled 'sick". The teacher wants the mech to be a little more bulky, I personally like the thinner legs considering how slender the mech looks. However I want to improve my design so I listened to the pro.  No questions asked!

I really like the bulk guy design and so does the teacher. I'm going to redo the drawing because I feel like a front view is boring, I also used symmetry so I feel like I cheated.
I will be working on the colored version this weekend. I'm definitely going to make 3D versions of those once the class is done because I'd love to see them in 3D!

Kachalot

Next WAYLE design is Kachalot. Based on Chachalot - aka Sperm Whale.

Sperm whale's head shape was the main inspiration for Kachalot's design. Second picture is the line sketch, the egg shaped helmet type design is pretty common so I tried to make it different. Sperm whale's head is actually rectangular like from the front view so I made it some what edgy.

As for the color choice, I really like Orka's black/white/blue scheme, but I didn't want to use it again and get them confused. One day at work I saw a black/gray/orange tapeholder and I really liked it, so I decided to go with that scheme. The helmet portion was originally white, but I really like dark color so I made it black grayish.

This picture also has a little more hardware details than Orka. Orka only had the head portion made, the rest was paintbashed using the helmet. For this one, the head, neck and chest plate were made, so some of the parts were photobashed and paint bashed. It was a first for me so it took awhile, but I like the result and I will do more so I can become proficient with it.

Orka

After a month of failing to make my Orka design, my persistence was finally paid off!

My mecha drawing (at least for traditional) are mostly influenced by the style of Transformers Prime, when it comes to digital though, it just turns into a whole different style.

I'm planning on doing more research and gathering references for mechanical parts to increase my visual library. And make some models so I can start learning how to kitbash and make designs quickly.

For now, I want to enjoy the fruit of my first mecha design.
